Sylvie TURPIN
Sylvie Turpin was born in 1956 in Changy, France.
She lives and works in Gy-les-Nonains and in Paris.
Sylvie Turpin aspires to work outside of the painting's frame, or at least on its edge. She starts off with a square monochrome plan, she gives it a shape by folding it, tightening it, stretching it, or by producing molds. She thus stands out from the classic form of the quadrangular frame, to rather expand into space.
For the American art historian Philip Armstrong, Sylvie Turpin’s work is on “the edge of the art work as a simple “limit” of what appears inside, while opening a space in which the work’s “margins” “divide”, rather than “separate, enclose or confine” […] « Sylvie Turpin explored a pictorial technique that is at equal distance between sculpture and painting, as if it was precisely this distance that allowed the artist to reach the limits, in which the work offers itself to the eye. »

Dans ses œuvres, Sylvie Turpin travaille en dehors des cadres du tableau, sur le bord, sur la tranche. Elle part d’un plan monochrome carré auquel elle donne une forme en pliant, resserrant, étirant ou en fabriquant des moules. Elle se détache ainsi de la forme plus classique du cadre quadrangulaire pour aller vers l’extérieur.
Pour l’historien d’art Américain Philip Armstrong, l’œuvre de Sylvie Turpin repose « le bord de l’œuvre comme simple « limite » de ce qui apparait dedans, tout en ouvrant ou en déclarant un espace dans lequel « les bords » de l’œuvre « divisent » plutôt qu’ils ne « séparent, enferment ou bornent » […] « Sylvie Turpin a exploré une technique picturale qui se tient à distance égale de la sculpture et du tableau, comme si c’était précisément cette distance qui permettait à l’artiste d’aller à même les limites dans lesquelles l’œuvre s’offre et s’expose au regard. »
