Michel MOUSSEAU
Born in 1934 in Anjou (France), Michel Mousseau lives and works in Paris.
Mainly a painter, he also has a live practice of drawing in the open, as he goes walking in the countryside. Descriptive at first, those drawings have grown into vegetation itself. They reveal a relationship to nature which is both moving and tragic just as in his paintings colour pays tribute to daylight.
His work is regularly shown at Virgile Legrand Gallery in Paris, 56 rue de l’Université 75007.
Since 1960 his paintings have been shown in Solo or Group exhibitions in France and abroad, Tokyo, London, Geneva, Tel Aviv, Prague, New York, Beijing in particular, and recently in Italy. Two major exhibitions of his works have has been held at the National Fine Arts Museum and National Library of Havana (Cuba).
In 2019, a special exhibition was devoted to his graphite works 103 dessins Territoire des origines in the Domaine de Kerguéhennec, an art center in Britanny.
His closeness to poets and writers and his own interest in paper as an artist material have enabled him to produce a great number of « livres d’artistes » with Pierre Albert-Birot, Eugène Guillevic, Luis Mizon, Pieyre de Mandiargues, Bernard Noël, in particular. In 2012, he has realised Jazz, an artist book in collaboration with the poet Zéno Bianu, for the Virgile Legrand Edition. His recent works include Présences, with Marie Etienne, and Simples merveilles with Eric Sarner.
In 2016, one of his artist books has been on show at the Grolier Club, New York City, during the exhibition « The Imaginative French Book in the 21st Century. »

Peintre, il développe aussi une pratique du dessin en direct dans la nature, en marchant dans la campagne. D’abord descriptifs, ces dessins sont devenus la matière même du végétal. Ils témoignent d’un sentiment de la nature, trouble et tragique. Parallèlement, dans sa peinture, la couleur rend hommage à la lumière du jour.
Il expose régulièrement à la Galerie Virgile Legrand à Paris, 56 rue de l’Université 75007.
Il a présenté son travail à travers de nombreuses expositions personnelles et collectives à Paris et hors de France, notamment à Tokyo, à Londres, Genève, Tel Aviv, Prague, ainsi qu’aux États-Unis, Pékin et récemment en Italie. Deux expositions importantes se sont tenues au Musée National des Beaux-Arts et à la Bibliothèque Nationale de La Havane (Cuba).
En 2019, le Domaine de Kerguéhennec (Morbihan) a consacré une exposition à son travail de dessin à la mine de plomb, intitulé 103 dessins Territoire des origines.
Sa proximité avec les poètes et son goût du papier l’ont amené à réaliser un grand nombre de livres d’artistes, avec entre autres Pierre Albert-Birot, Eugène Guillevic, Luis Mizon, Pieyre de Mandiargues, Bernard Noël.
