Michel BUTOR

Michel Butor was born in September 1926 in Mons-en-Baroeul, in France. He lives and works at Lucinges.

 

Michel Butor first started his career as a professor of literature at university. He taught in the United-States, before moving on to the University of Nice in France, and finally to Geneva where he retired in 1991.

 

Michel Butor has an international audience – in Europe, but also in Japan, in Australia, in the United-States, and more – and is mainly known to the public for his activities as a writer. From 1957 onwards, his works tried to transmit a form of narrative detachment, to represent the contemporary world in a different way. In that respect, Michel Butor’s work approaches the stance of the Nouveau Roman without completely attaching himself to the movement.

 

Ultimately, Michel Butor is a creator of the experimentation of various narrative and stylistic techniques. One finds in his work a constant will to represent the contemporary world, may it be with stories or by artistic collaborations with painters, or even in his own photographical production. Indeed, in the mid-1950s, Michel Butor started his work as a photographer. He produced different series during his long stays in Spain and in Greece, but also during his time in the United-Stated where he taught as a professor in the 1960s.

 

Michel Butor still has an important photographical practice, yet this fact remains unknown by the critics and the exegetes of his books.

 

Michel Butor exposed his photographes at the Virgile Legrand Gallery in October 2011 and has published an artist book that was printed in twelve copies.

Michel Butor a exercé une carrière universitaire en tant que professeur de littérature. Il a enseigné aux Etats-Unis, puis à l’université de Nice, et enfin à Genève où il prendra sa retraite en 1991.

 

Michel Butor dispose d’une renommée internationale, en Europe, mais aussi au Japon, en Australie, aux Etats-Unis…C’est surtout pour ses activités de romancier que le public connaît Michel Butor. Ses premiers ouvrages, dès 1957, cherchaient à concilier une forme de détachement narratif, afin de représenter autrement le monde contemporain. En cela, Michel Butor se rapproche des positions du Nouveau Roman, sans toutefois l’inscrire véritablement dans cette école.

 

En réalité, Michel Butor est un créateur de l’expérimentation de diverses techniques narratives et stylistiques. On retrouve dans son œuvre une volonté constante de représenter le monde contemporain, qu’il s’agisse de récits ou de collaborations artistiques avec des peintres mais aussi dans sa propre œuvre de photographe. Car dès le milieu des années 1950 Michel Butor se lance dans la photographie.

 

Il réalise différentes séries de prises de vues lors de longs séjours en Espagne et en Grèce, mais également lorsqu’il réside au Etats-Unis comme professeur dans les années 1960. Michel Butor a une œuvre photographique importante encore, en grande partie, ignoré par les critiques et les exégètes de son œuvre.

 

Michel Butor a exposé ses photographies à la Galerie Virgile Legrand en octobre 2011 et a réalisé pour la galerie un livre d’artiste composé de photos, publié à douze exemplaires.
