Louis SCLAVIS
Louis Sclavis was born in 1953 in Lyon. He is a clarinetist, saxophonist and composer of jazz, as welle as a photographer of the jazz world.
To this day he produced several exhibitions. The father of Louis Sclavis was a photographer and is the one who passed him down an interest in photography.
After his studies at the Conservatory of Lyon, in the beginning of the 70’s. he started to produce and record himself.
He received the Django Reinhardt award of « the best French musician of jazz » in 1988. In 1989, he obtained with his quartet the first award of the Biennale of Barcelona of the best European creator. One year later, he received at the Midem the British Jazz Award of the best foreign artist. He is also rewarded by a Djangodor in 1993 in the category « best record of French jazz of the year ».
The photographs of Louis Sclavis belong to several fields (dance, music, landscape). We chose for this exhibition photographs linked to his activity of musician.
Louis Sclavis created an artist’s book for the Publishing House and the gallery Virgile Legrand. This book is a portfolio of four originals photographs, accompanied by a text written by Franck Médioni.
Ten copies of this artist’s book were presented during an exhibition at the Gallery Virgile Legrand, which took place in 2016.
Louis Sclavis, né en 1953 à Lyon est un clarinettiste, saxophoniste et compositeur de jazz et photographe du monde du jazz.
Il a réalisé à ce jour plusieurs expositions. Le père de Louis Sclavis était photographe, ce qui lui a donné très tôt l’intérêt pour la photographie.
Après son cursus au Conservatoire de Lyon, il se produit et enregistre à partir des années 1970.
Le Prix Django Reinhardt du « meilleur musicien de jazz français » lui est attribué en 1988. En 1989, il obtient avec son quartet le premier prix de la Biennal de Barcelona décerné au meilleur créateur européen. Un an plus tard, il reçoit au Midem le British Jazz Award du meilleur artiste étranger. Il est également récompensé par un Djangodor en 1993 dans la catégorie « meilleur disque de jazz français de l’année ».
Les photographies de Louis Sclavis relèvent de plusieurs domaines (danse, musique, paysage). Nous avons choisi pour cette exposition des photos liées à son activité de musicien.
Louis Sclavis a conçu un livre d’artiste pour les éditions et la galerie Virgile Legrand. Ce livre se présente sous la forme d’un porte-folio de quatre photographies originales, accompagné d’un texte écrit par Franck Médioni.
Dix exemplaires de ce livre d’artiste ont été présentés lors d’une exposition à la galerie Virgile Legrand en 2016.
