Jean LE GAC
Jean Le Gac was born in 1936 in Alès, France.
He lives and works in Paris.
Jean Le Gac is one of the representatives of the Nouvelle Figuration. At the same time he is the “inventor” of his own pictorial universe and the ethnographer of his work. Presented by Harald Szeemann at the « Documenta V », among the Individual Mythologies, Jean Le Gac transforms himself into a living model for his compositions.
According to Le Gac, the choice of the initial document is an important part of the work of a painter, it is one of the conditions and primary phases of the pictorial production.
His universe is a tribute to the master Edouard Manet. Starting from the painting “Le Torero mort” painted by Manet (this painting is itself inspired by an anonymous painting, “Le Soldat mort”, which was attributed for a long time to Velasquez), Le Gac is confronted with the strange serenity of this masterpiece.
Jean Le Gac is reading painting in a new and innovative way : he uses different techniques and seizes it through his personal interpretation.
Jean Le Gac exhibited his work at the Virgile Legrand Gallery in June 2011 and June 2012. He also created an artist book which published in twelve copies.

Pour le livre et l’exposition réalisés à la Galerie Virgile Legrand Jean Le Gac s’ouvre à un hommage au maître, Edouard Manet. A partir et autour du tableau “Le Torero mort” de Manet (ce tableau étant lui-même inspiré d’une peinture anonyme, “Le Soldat mort”, qui fut longtemps attribuée à Vélasquez), Le Gac s’est confronté à l’étrange sérénité de ce chef-d’œuvre.
Jean Le Gac en fait une relecture neuve et novatrice et se l’approprie en l’interprétant à sa manière.
Jean Le Gac a exposé en juin 2011 et 2012 à la Galerie Virgile Legrand, et a réalisé un livre d’artiste publié à douze exemplaires.
