Daniel DEZEUZE
Daniel Dezeuze was born in 1942 in Alès, France.
He grew up in Montpellier where his father, who was also a painter, taught him drawing and painting. He studied Spanish at the University of Montpellier while being a part-time student at the School of Fine-Arts. When he was 20, in 1962-63, he was head of the Alliance Française in the Asturias in Spain.
In 1964-65 he received a scholarship to study at the University of Mexico (Department of Architecture and Urbanism.) Once back in France, he left the country again to go to North America where he discovered American painting in reel and not just through reproductions.
He did his military service in the Cooperation in Toronto, Canada. When he came back to France in 1967 he moved to Paris.
The same year his well-known work, « Stretcher covered with a sheet of plastic » allows us to understand his formal and intellectual concerns, questioning the tradition of Western painting, and its material components.
As a founding member of the group Supports-Surfaces from 1970 to 1972, he participated in numerous group shows including the one at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris in 1970.
From 1971 to 1991 he exhibited regularly at the Gallery Yvon Lambert in Paris.
Since 1977 he has taught at the School of Fine-Arts in Montpellier.
Since 1978 he has had exhibitions at the Gallery Albert Baronian in Brussels.
In 1987 he spent four months in China where he exhibited his work.
In 1998 he had a large retrospective of his work at the Carré d’Art – Museum of Contemporary Art in Nîmes.
Daniel Dezeuze est né en 1942 à Alès.
Jeunesse montpelliéraine puis études d’espagnol. Elève libre à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier. Son père, artiste peintre, lui enseigne les bases du métier .A 20 ans assure la direction d’une Alliance Française en Espagne dans les Asturies en 1962-63.
Bourse du Mexique à l’Université de Mexico (Département d’Architecture et d’Urbanisme) en 1964-65. Retour en France et nouveau départ pour l’Amérique du Nord. Il découvre la peinture américaine dans sa réalité même et non pas au travers de reproductions.
Service militaire dans la Coopération à Toronto (Canada). Retour en France et installation à Paris en 1967.
La même année, sa fameuse œuvre intitulée « Châssis avec feuille de plastique tendue » permet de mieux comprendre ses recherches formelles et intellectuelles de remise en cause du support traditionnel de la peinture, le tableau et ses composants matériels.
Membre fondateur du groupe Supports-Surfaces de 1970 à 1972. Il participe à de nombreuses expositions collectives dont celle au Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris en 1970. Obtention d’un Doctorat sur l’oeuvre de Vicente Huidobro.
A partir de 1971 jusqu’en 1991 expose à la galerie Yvon Lambert à Paris.
Depuis 1977 enseigne à l’Ecole des Beaux-arts de Montpellier.
Depuis 1978 expose à la galerie Albert Baronian à Bruxelles.
En 1987 séjourne en Chine pour la première fois et y expose.
En 1998 se déroule une importante rétrospective de son œuvre à Carré d’Art – Musée d’art contemporain à Nîmes.
